It has been a while since my last post on the blog and I just wanted to share what has been up with you. I have been between water time for about 6 months now. the sailing team has started up again but I have been so busy that I have not gotten on the water. Today and yesterday were spent fixing a rhodes 19. the boat needed new rubrails and so riveting was involved and then it needed a new sidestay, so today we finished the rubrail and replaced the side stay. the time off of the water has gotten hard. before the sixth months I was on the water nearly every day. i spent 6 days a week over the summer on the water and so today was a little relieving to be working on a boat Today we also found the missing endicott ‘79 shooting star. we thought the boat had been lost but it was just in the yard hidden from us. but that has all changed now we have located our boats and are sailing. I will be sailing next week and am very excited, for next weekend is the teams first regatta that i will attend this season. it is good for us. so here are some pictures of the Rhodes 19 called Dynamite.

A little history on the boat. we got the boat for free after the explosion a couple of years ago at the propane factory. there was a boat yard next to it and while most of the boats were destroyed this one lived, but the owner did not want it anymore so he gave it to us. we renames her and painted her. now we love her.

SNOWWWW!!!

So yesterday it dumper about a foot of snow on us here, north of Boston.  fun times.  there are not many new updates in the sailing world, just at Sailkarma.com there is a discusion about who is screwing up the America’s Cup more.  the Cup, or Auld Mug is in-between regattas untill the court battle in New York is settled.  The decision should come this month with the time of the AC33 being told.  and finaly we will know if dogzilla will be the fastest boat to never race, or if we get to really see her sprint.  and if the Swiss can come up with a mulithull in time for the race if it happens.  to tide you all over , this is a clip of BMW Oracle 90, or as it is also called, Dogzilla.

the winter time is very busy on maintanace of boats, but sometimes it is just to nice to do work, and you must instead just enjoy the time outside. the boats can sit outside and wait, they enjoy the weather too.

the weather is starting to warm up outside and the boats are still sitting out in the weather.  they need major work as is obvious in the photos, but we do not have the facilities at the school for maintenance.  so they sit in the sun.

legen at EC is that the school used to own a boat that was just washed up on the shore during a storm and got destroyed on the rocks.  all that remains of the boat is the lead of the keel and some fiberglass.

Today is a video day!!!!!

we begin with a video of Team Russia of the Volvo Ocean Race doing a Chinese gybe. this is when the boat is headed downwind and the wind crosses over the stern of the boat, forcing the sail to change sides. it is a very violent maneuver and if someone gets hit by the boom they are in serious trouble. the maneuver should be avoided at all costs.

The next video is about boats breaking. This boat is also part of the Volvo Ocean Race and recently had the boom break in the middle of the ocean. Earlier in the race the boat Green Dragon’s boom . but kept on racing.
Green dragon actually passed other boats with a broken boom and did very well for the race. Puma’s boat Il Mostro had a choice of stopping for a little and try to fix the boom or keep on racing and jury rig a boom. Puma was in-between here because the boat had sumstained serious damage the on a normal boat would have called for them to call the Coast Guard and ask for assistance. they kept racing and finished will in the race.

jump to 1:20 to see the boom break

AND ON TO THE PICTURES!!!!

this is a boat that was sailing at Tufts and didn’t see a boat approaching on a port tack. though the boat had rights over the other boats according to the rules, since they failed to avoid the collision, they were penalized by not getting any points for the day. the boat is in-between races and will probably be off the water for a month. this is the worst place for a boat to be hit, because since it is where Fiberglas meets and inside of the tank it is very hard to physically repair it.

It is February right now and to most water dwelling people that means that there is not much sailing goin on. In fact most New England boat yards are packed to the brim with boats in winter storage. these boats are in between seasons and just waiting to have water slapping their hulls again. some people in the North east still sail. these people are called frostbiters, and they are extreme sailors. the must bundle up in warm clothing and then wear dry suits on top to keep them dry. here is a look at some sailboats in yards and some boats on the water

photos courtesy of Sailboatlistings.com

all these boats are large and must be brought to the water on strong lifts. smaller boats like the Foil Moth are easily transportable on a trailer and can be brought to the water by as few as 3 people.

there is one Foil Moth in the foreground and there is another moth to the left on the waters edge. here is a moth sailing so you know what they are like.

This is a moth

the moth is a boat that operates above the water at speed. It does this by using hydrafoils on the keel and the rudder.

I know every one wants to climb the mast of a Volvo Ocean Racing boat now!

THIS is not what you want to do to a boat, you do this and then you owe someone some money!  this is a 1000-2000 dollar repair!!!!
